SMASH: Sunday Morning Adult Study Hour
Builders Class
The Builders Class is the longest Continuously running adult class at Graystone. Their name comes from the founding members who after returning from World War II, got busy building their families, their faith. and their nation. They are currently studying the book of Exodus. This chronicles the primary saving act of the Old Testament. The class invites everyone to join them in studying these important scriptures. Class begins with the singing of a Hymn and a time of prayer before the lesson. The Builders Class meets in room L14 and is led by Rev. Dick Cassel, Bill Shane, and Ken Hershman.
Campus Class
The campus class provides an opportunity for college students and young adults to not only socialize and support each other but to share Christian life together as they face the challenges of living in a secular world. This fall's sermon series, "Growing in Our Life Together"will be the focus of class study and discussion. The class meets upstairs in the West Wing and is lead by Alan Seymour, George Caroff, and Adam Strawcutter.
Chapel Class
The Chapel Class is a warm group of adults who enjoy studying the Bible with a uniform curriculum standard curriculum. This quarter they are studying the book of Genesis. What a great opportunity to start the new program year with "In the beginning..." Each class begins with devotion and prayer. The lesson starts promptly at 10 a.m. and finishes at 10:40. The teachers are Judy and Nelson Stahlman. All are welcome to join the Chapel class in room L15.
Welcome Back Class
The Welcome Back Class has an interesting name; it is almost a metaphor for faith itself. As we mature as Christians our faith walk takes us on many different paths and calls us to many different activities, whether we have been out of the habit of attending adult learning opportunities or have spent time serving elsewhere, all are welcome back to a time of studying the word and sharing our faith journey together. This fall the Welcome Back class will begin a study of Christianity and Islam. If you are looking for a warm and inviting class to get back to, this one may be just for you. Welcome Back meets in room L16 and is taught by Brook McGinnis and Kevin Addleman.
Marriage and Family
This summer, the Marriage and Family class will be studying the book, The Five Love Languages, by Gary Chapman. Being able to communicate love in a way that energizes your spouse is critical in marriage. But its not that easy. Ever wonder why the love messages you are sending aren't received well or misunderstood? Communicating love takes thought and foresight as well as understanding how your spouse wants to be loved. Every couple interested in improving their communication skills are welcome. The Marriage and Family class meets in the chapel and is taught by Pastor Rick and Beth Hurley, and Steve and Karen Wolfe.
Prime Time Class
This fall the Prime Time calss is beginning to explore the topic of Discipleship and what it means to be a Disciple Making Church through the study of the book of Luke. Come and explore this timely topic with them as they discuss, "What is a disciple? What are six characteristics of a disciple? and How can I be the disciple Christ would want me to be. Come and be challenged in room L3. Prime Time is lead by a team of teachers that include Marian Fiscus, Ron and Marian Marshall, Jack Shepler, and Phil Evans.
Challenge Class
This fall the Challenge Class is studying the book of Hebrews. A wonderful study for it is as much a sermon as a letter. In fact, in the words of the author it is called a "word exhortation" or encouragement. The book also gives us examples of God's "faith heroes" who persevered in spite of great difficulties and adverse circumstances (Hebrews 11). In Hebrews we find a magnificently rendered portrait of our Lord Jesus Christ - the author and finisher of our great salvation (Hebrews 12:2). The Challenge class meets in room L17 and is taught by Dave Frick.
Seekers Class
The Seekers Class gives its members the opportunity to discuss contemporary issues in the world and how Christianity is impacted by these issues. This fall, the call will be reading and discussing, "The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind: Why are Christians Living Just Like the Rest of the World?" by Ron Sider. In this candid and challenging book, Sider addresses an embarrassing reality: most Christians' lives are no different from the lives of their secular neighbors. While it is not easy medicine to take, this book is a much-needed prophetic call to transformed living. Class discussion is encouraged and open to all. The Seekers Class meets in room 216 and is led by Vin Miller and Andy Arblaster.
